Since 1996, the commune of Mantes-la-Jolie has been involved in a vast regeneration program in the district of Val Fourré: 135 hectares, 7,000 homes (including 80% social housing). 13 out of 22 tower blocks which made up the district have been demolished. The pubic areas have been redeveloped. New facilities have been created: hospital, cultural centre. Economic growth is returning: shops, business centres, offices. The
greatly redeveloped district has rediscovered an attractiveness.
The most run down place in the district yesterday has just been set as the first stone in a major aquatic centre, which aims to attract swimmers within a radius of several dozen kilometres.
The district can now be considered as a place of development. The objective is to start diversification of the habitat so as to offer the Mantois populations quality homes and increase the social mix of this district.
Before 2005 and from the end of the 1970s, no new operations had been developed in this huge district. Since the middle of the 1990s, the developments carried out have made it possible to free up significant land reserves which now constitute an excellent potential for diversifying the offer.
Some projects have already begun and the first achievements will be seen from 2008.
However, the potential for development of the district amounts to 1,500 homes over 15 years. For immediately useable plots of land, the construction capacity is between 500 and 650 homes.
Today, all of the project’s partners agree on the same fact: after the urban regeneration, a new era will begin for this area, that of urban development.
